Wake up and get in the kitchen!
As previously noted, I am a rather pathetic shell of a human for a few hours after my eyes slowly ease open in the morning. This condition renders the idea of a complex recipe for breakfast too horrifying to contemplate. Innovation and repurposing are the key to a.m. survival.
Cue the music, because, as the song says, “I tumbled out of bed and stumbled to the kitchen,” then I got out the stemmed crystal glass, the wedge of lime and ice cold Diet Coke, and turned the oven to preheat. Waiting in the fridge to be picked next by the culinary team was the remainder of the sausage/cream cheese stuffing mixture that had formerly been used to top mushrooms. This morning, after the mixture said “Pick me!,” I spread it on our lovely toast points (did I mention they are made from thinly sliced low carb hot dog buns?) and popped the little jewels into the oven to get warm and bubbly. Add a little fruit and you have a fine way to greet the dawn. (You know, the dawn that occurs about 9:30 in the morning?)
At this point in the retelling of our saga, I know you will not be surprised to learn shopping was again on our agenda. Our second home, Sur la Table, beckoned to us. The cutting boards in the condo that had undoubtedly been “just fine” for visitors before us did not pass muster with either Michele or I. There were supplies we still needed to finish equipping our kitchen-away-from-home. Plus, we were ready for more flowers and, of course, food!
You may be wondering what Michele is doing in the photo above. I can clue you in. She’s phoning a taxi. After walking down and around the Market and accumulating sacks weighing more than most 3-year-olds, we decided to hitch a ride back home. We needed to have lots of time to prepare, because it was the 4th of July!!!
The Market was dressed in patriotic finery, and we wanted to prepare an appropriate gastronomic celebration. Plus, we had made a detour through World Market, where we purchased (more) dishes and we didn’t want to risk dropping them in our weary state.
We had flowers to arrange (in the appropriate color scheme, of course), napkins to iron, garnishes to make, and a feast to prepare. We couldn’t dawdle.
We can’t wait to show you what we whipped up!
