Game Day Dinner
Pull out the team colors and be ready to celebrate!
Having an NBA team in your city is great, but having a fabulous team like the Oklahoma City Thunder is AMAZING! In regular season alone, each NBA team plays 82 games — 41 each of home and away. If your team gets into the playoffs, there are even more opportunities to cheer. As I write this, we’re in the middle of the Western Conference Finals, OKC Thunder vs. the San Antonio Spurs. The pressure is on!
We typically watch the action on TV, something my ears appreciate, since commentators have dubbed our home games Loud City. Dinner at home, then we settle in to watch. The Thunder colors are vivid blue and orange, so I just started pulling out what I could find in the cabinets that fit the color scheme. It’s time to experiment and find just the right combo for a celebratory dinner for the next win!
With orange as one of the team colors, there were lots of possible choices for flowers for the centerpiece. Dahlias, tulips, gerbera daisies, glads. I kept coming back to pincushion proteas. I had a vase that was like five mini vases, but it was one unit (the water even flows in between, making it easier to keep it filled). It was bright orange. Since I had already layered on an orange table runner for my experiment, I pulled out a mirror to put in the center of the table to give the vase and flowers some visual separation from the rest of the orange — and also to multiply its effect. I like it!
Part of what will govern my choice will be what I decide to serve. I love the plate with fishes, but I’m picturing oysters on it and this just isn’t the time of year for that. Chinese carryout, perhaps? That would work with the bamboo-like flatware and the Chinese blue and white beaded napkin ring.
I like this combination of orange square plate and blue flower plate, except for one thing. The proportions aren’t right. The orange plate is too big to sit on top of the blue one. The colors do look marvy, however, particularly with the orange placemat, ivory flatware, and cobalt blue glass.
This is the winner. Blue straw placemat, vivid orange plate. Small orange floral side plate. Double napkins in white and bright blue. Works for me, and I’m sure the large plate will work better than double plates, particularly on this small table. I have plenty of each element, so I can pull the matching pieces out and be ready to let the Thunder roll!
The best part of the away games is that you can watch the game on TV, fix your favorite foods to serve on your team colors, and root for your favorite team until you drop asleep in your own bed! Whatever the sport, whoever the team, get excited — and show it!
We went to one of the 2012 Finals games. Michael snapped lots of pics and was shocked the next day to realize that on one he took of the Jumbotron at the end of the game displaying the final score, there I was — looking pleased. 🙂 See below. Worn out, but happy.
