September always ushers in memories of the state fair for me. I have always loved the lights, the excitement, the amazing sights, sounds, smells. I’m one of those who paid to see the half man/half lizard person. I’d squeal like a little girl (Oh, yeah, I was one) as I dashed through the fun house and hall of mirrors. I pined after the stuffed animals and wished I had someone to win them for me. And, yes, I ate my share of saltwater taffy and cotton candy. Ugh. It’s a wonder that only the rides made me sick.
Today’s fair is like a competition to see who can fry the weirdest things. Twinkies. Oreos. Vegetables of all types. Cheese. I couldn’t resist snapping pics of the signs as we strolled around the midway one day. When we got home, a big fresh salad sure sounded good, or a slice of melon, or a handful of strawberries — anything that was still in the form nature intended.. I reeked of fried food for a couple of days just from the grease settling out of the air during our visit to the fair. It’s a good thing it’s just once a year.
