Kids in one room, adults in another for the Christmas meal? Sounds like my childhood. We certainly never minded getting to eat with others our age, far away from the “Eat the rest of your peas” type admonitions that always flowed from the mouths of adults. Make the kids’ Christmas table festive and, most importantly, fun. Nothing stuffy here. It’s not formal, it is not intimidating. It is whimsical and playful and colorful and just right for the kid in all of us.
Put your formal china in the other room, along with your fancy glasses and silverware. For the kids’ Christmas table, add a big dose of personality. Here, we’ve used a charger plate, with a dinner plate on top. The napkin is simply folded without a napkin ring, and the cup soup is set on top of a saucer to catch spills. Colorful straws are inside the drinking glass.
While the original purpose of the cup soups may have been to hold a liquid meal, feel free to put whatever you like in them. Fill them with macaroni and cheese. Nest chicken tenders inside. Cut sandwiches into vertical pieces and stand them up. Don’t get all trapped in the mindset of “Must have soup to fill the soup bowls.”
Funky plaid flatware. Little red ramekins for sauce for dipping their kid stuff in. Salt & pepper Santas.
See the wooden Christmas trees with the Christmas-shaped suckers? Good for kids — and I’ll be using them for other things later. Pictures to follow!
Sometimes, kids long to eat at the grown-up table. With this tablescape, you will be chasing the adults away from what you’ve created for the pint-sized crowd!
