Transforming Store-bought Cupcakes

Just in time for Halloween, we’ve trotted out the pretty colors of the spooky holiday.  In some, we have full-sized petals outside the paper liners, while in the other picture, you see the effect with petals from tiny tea roses in an autumn hue.

You can read all the details belowww about how to do the transformation — whether for a birthday, holiday, or just because you want to make something awesome-looking.

More Ideas for Desserts

Just because you’re too busy to bake doesn’t mean you have to serve something that looks like you toted it home from the bakery section of the supermarket.  Particularly if you are taking it somewhere or serving guests, step it up, my friend.  Aim for greatness.  In this case, it’s easy to achieve.  (This also works if you actually made your own cupcake and are less than thrilled about their looks.  It’s not illegal in the world of food to choose pretty over bad-looking!)

You need three things:

Attractive paper cupcake liners.  You won’t be baking in them.  You will use them as a nest to place your already-baked cupcakes into.

Rose petals of your favorite color, or whatever color the supermarket is selling.  Do remember that you want the color to go well with your cupcake liners and your serving platter.  See the picture above?  Harmony, pure harmony.

Some sort of garnish for the top.  Perhaps you don’t keep candied violets in your pantry.  [That sentence reminds me of when our friend Pan was telling a story about  some of her travels and she paused and said, “You and Michael have been to Iceland, haven’t you?”  I burst out laughing.]  I made these candiedd violets (and the directions are elsewhere on the site), but if you don’t have time to bake cupcakes, you don’t have time to make candied violets, so improvise.  A tiny slice of fruit (if it doesn’t clash with the cupcake color), half a berry, a mint leaf, sprinkles from the grocery store (used very sparingly — they usually look much better than they taste).  Any of those approaches will preserve your reputation for coming up with something beautiful.

Simply surround your cupcake with rose petals inside the added cupcake liner.  Top with the garnish of your choice.  Place them on a gorgeous platter or cake stand.  See, transforming store-bought wasn’t hard at all!
