In under 5 minutes you can make and season your own chips. No frying required, due to an amazing microwave device — the TopChips Kit from mastrad (available now from places like Sur La Table — look around). I knew I would love it when I read that it includes its own slicer dicer. How clever of them to ensure that each slice is just the perfect thickness.
Ingredients
- Sweet potato
- Seasonings (optional, see below)*
Directions: This is important. Put the slices on a paper towel (single layer of the slices) and allow them to air dry for about 15 minutes. If there is too much moisture, they won’t crisp up!
When the sweet potato slices are dry, arrange them on the TopChips silicone tray in a single layer with no overlaps. Microwave for 3 minutes. Give them a few seconds afterwards to crisp up. Adjust the cooking time on the next batch so it is a little longer or shorter, if need be.
I had fun using small fall cookie cutters to cut the slices into shapes — leaves, pumpkins, acorns. They then make a great garnish for soups or whatever.
*Season with the seasoning of your choice. I used a wonderful Roast Vegetables & Fries seasoning from The Gourmet Collection on the batches I wanted to have a savory flavor. I used a cinnamon and Splenda mixture to make others sweet. The sweet ones are good to use to garnish desserts!
