Michele was coming and we were having soup and salad for lunch. The weather had turned crisp and cold, so a fall tablescape seemed in order. I started grabbing different pieces. Orange placemats — oh, yeah. Sunflower plates. Hmmmm, they needed a bit of color underneath, so the lime green plates seemed like a good choice. The lime green plates didn’t look the way I wanted right on top of the orange placemats, so I placed them on chargers . Then we needed soup bowls…and napkins, of course…and silverware, and glasses.
When you’ve put so many dishes on your table that there’s little room for food, you know you have a problem! I loved the way this looked — until we sat down and tried to eat. The plates rocked on the plates. It was difficult to pick up and put down our glasses because space was so tight. There was no place to put the salad plates when we were done with them. Eek. Chaos on the lunch table!
Ditch the charger plates on a small table. Don’t stack plates on plates (except for display purposes before a meal — remove the excess stuff before people sit down). Same with the flower arrangement. If there isn’t enough room, remove it when it is time to eat. Smaller napkin rings would have been good, too.
