Have you ever noticed how beautiful food is when it comes out of a restaurant kitchen? One of their secrets is to clean off spots, smears and spills at just the right time.
The pic above shows a really luscious-looking baked dish, but once it came out of the oven, I realized that I had forgotten to take a moistened paper towel and wipe off the messy parts around the edges. My failure to do that meant that the thin little layers of goo baked more quickly than the thick part of the casserole and my “mess” shows up as dark brown/black.
Had I taken just a few seconds to pause and wipe away the splatters on the sides of the casserole dish, I would have truly achieved the pretty food look.
It’s not just a technique for baked items either. If you’re plating your food, examine the plate after you place your food on it. Before you present it, patrol for errant food particles and remove them. You’ll be glad you did.
